Cycling along Kamokawa River, Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto Private Cycling Tour
Filled with Buddhist temples, stunning landscaped gardens, traditional wooden houses, Shinto shrines and Imperial Palaces, one of the best ways to explore Kyoto is by bike. On this half-day private cycling tour, a knowledgeable local guide will lead you to the best destinations to see what makes Kyoto so magical. You will pedal your way along the banks of the river through the scenic Miyagawacho and Gion geisha districts. These are two of the most likely locations in Japan for you to see a geisha or maiko (apprentice geisha). The two are difficult to tell apart without knowing exactly what you are looking for, but your guide will be able to spot subtle differences in their hairstyles and kimonos that they will be able to share with you.
You will continue your cycle trip along the Shirakawa canal which is lined with cherry blossoms and weeping willow trees, past traditional dark wooden Kyoto style tea houses, before heading to the Imperial Palace Park, the former residence of the Emperor of Japan, with its carp-filled lakes and beautiful gardens. Then it’s time to head back towards Kyoto station along the Kamo-gawa River, which is great for people-watching thanks to its popularity with strolling locals, playing children and picnicking couples. In springtime the cherry blossoms come into full bloom along the banks of the river and in summer restaurants open breezy balconies looking out to the river. If you would like to experience this, or simply stay out a bit longer independently just let us know and you will be welcome to keep your bike until 19:00 at no charge.
