Holidays to Laos

A holiday to Laos is like a journey back in time. Switch off, unplug and relax in the most laid-back country in Asia. After only recently opening its doors to tourists, you’ll discover inspiringly modest villages, breath-taking and unspoilt scenery, and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

The towns and cities in Laos are a delightful contrast to the buzz of its more well-known neighbours like Thailand and Vietnam. In the modest capital of Vientiane, you’ll find elegant architecture and a growing café culture, while in the sleepy province of Champasak you’ll gain a real sense of the authentic traditions that Laos is known for.

The diverse landscape in Laos offers a wealth of activities for you to enjoy. If you’re a thrill seeker, head to Vang Vieng where you can trek through mesmerising underground river caves, swing your way through exhilarating jungle zip lines, or kayak down the Mekong river. If you’re a nature lover, you’ll enjoy exploring the jungle, surveying the glittering rice fields and spotting wondrous animals like gibbons and leopards, and hundreds of species of birds.

When to go to Laos

Being a landlocked country Laos is good to visit all year round, although it still has wet and dry seasons. The dry season is between October to late April and the wet season falls between March to April. If you're into caving and mountain climbing, you should avoid the wetter months, although this is a great time to explore the 4000 islands. The ideal time to visit is between October to March.

January

sun
20°

Expect dry sunny days with low rainfall. The high altitude regions may feel a bit chilly though.

February

sun
25°

Sunny dry days with relatively cool temperatures mean this is a good month to go trekking in Muang La. Pakse and the 4000 islands will see slightly warmer temperatures (30°C).

March

sun
27°

Temperatures start to rise, but humidity will remain low, making it a good time to visit Laos.

April

sun-cloud-rain
30°

Usually one of the hottest months of the year where Pakse and the 4000 islands can hit 40°C. There could also be some infrequent showers in the Northern regions.

May

sun-cloud-rain
30°

Short bouts of intense rain followed by blue skies and sunshine, across most of the region.

June

rain
29°

Short intense rainfall, which will be heavier the higher you go up Laos.

July

rain
29°

One of the wettest months of the year and the wet weather can make caving and rock climbing difficult.

August

rain
29°

Lots of rain expected throughout, but the 4000 islands will be accessible by boat and the waterfalls will be full of water.

September

sun-cloud-rain
28°

The rain will start to taper off and the countryside will be at its most beautiful.

October

sun-cloud-rain
26°

Decent weather seen across most of Laos although it might be chilly in the mountainous regions.

November

sun-cloud
25°

Pleasant conditions across most of Laos with minimal chance of rain.

December

sun

One of the most popular months to go to Laos with lovely dry sunny weather and cool temperatures.
