Holidays to Chobe National Park, Botswana

Standing proudly in the northeastern corner of Botswana is a paradise that plays host to one of the widest ranges of wild animals anywhere in Africa – Chobe National Park. Botswana’s first national park is also its most biologically diverse, famed for its lush landscape of vibrant floodplains, bustling pools of water and dense woodlands, all home to one of the largest concentrations of animals in the continent.

Easily the most well-known area of the park is the Chobe Riverfront. The constant source of water makes it a hotspot for seeing some of the world’s most iconic animals all year round, and the riverfront attracts some of the biggest herds of elephants anywhere in the world. And it’s not just these mammoth mammals on display – there are also giraffes, buffalos and antelopes, as well as over 400 species of birds. For the best view, take to the water on a river cruise, blending the relaxation of floating across the water with the thrill of seeing nature’s greatest creatures.

The animals don’t just hang around the river though. The Savuti Marsh is also renowned as a safari hotspot, and with good reason. Travelling across the rolling grasslands and vast savannahs to Leopard Rock and Gobabis Hill, you’ll be treated to views of rhinos, zebras and warthogs – as well as the cheetahs, leopards and lions that use them as prey.

If you want to really experience wild Botswana in all its glory, why not try a camping trip or stay at one of the wonderful lodges in Savuti? The area has a number of campsites and stunning lodges that allow you to experience a comfortable night’s sleep under one of the most stunning arrays of dazzling stars that the world has to offer.

There’s plenty to discover a little further afield, too. If you’re in Chobe National Park, it’s well worth making the trip to the world-famous Victoria Falls. Known to locals as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, this is the biggest waterfall in the world – and one of its most awe-inspiring spectacles.

I was lucky enough to celebrate my 30th birthday in Botswana. Boating along the Delta waters spotting amazing birdlife, champagne in hand, is definitely one of my fondest birthday memories.
