Holidays to the Okavango Delta, Botswana
There are few places on earth quite like Okavango Delta. Your adventure in north-west Botswana will take in some of Africa's most unique geography and some of its most iconic - and endangered - species. With UNESCO World Heritage Status thanks to it being one of the few interior delta systems that doesn't flow into a sea or ocean, Okavango is home to cheetahs, elephants, hippos and lions that have adapted to a unique environment. This is the Africa of your imagination: filled with colour, life and lush landscapes, all in a delicate balance.
Your first stop has to be a visit to Moremi Game Reserve. Don't miss Chief's Island, the largest in the delta, once the sole hunting ground of the local tribal leader and now a refuge for wildlife escaping the rising waters in the wet season. Time it right and you can see a unique concentration of birds, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, zebra and antelope, all in one place.
To get a taste of life in nature make sure you visit Paradise Pools, located within the boundaries of the Moremi reserve. Come in the dry season and you'll find animals arriving in search of water - and a lion or leopard poised to make a kill.
To cap off your adventure in the Okavango Delta, it's time to take to the water and embark on a boat safari. Spot fearsome crocodiles and huge hippos up close, or catch a herd of elephants in a candid moment by the waterside. For a truly authentic trip, talk to one of the locals and set out on a traditional Mokoro canoe.
