Maasai Village Visit, Maasai Mara National Park
On collection from your lodge, either in the early morning or late afternoon, transfer with your guide to one of the Maasai Villages in the local area. On arrival, your guide will brief you on the ethics of your visit and guide you through the village whilst introducing you to the local families and explaining some of the cultures and traditions.
Whilst exploring you can ask any questions you want and learn about various aspects of Maasai daily life including the uses of local medicinal plants, the role of women and their social structures, the importance of cattle and the various stages of life which all Maasai pass through from a young child to respected elder.
The village is built out of traditional materials such as mud and cow dung and with traditional methods. You will see the cattle, sheep and goat enclosures where the cows are kept safe overnight from nocturnal predators and theft. These traditional pastoral customs are still very much in practice and evident throughout the village.
Should you wish to be more hands on and involved you can in various ways such as helping to milk the livestock, herding cattle with the unbelievably young boys, plastering a house with mud, dancing with the warriors, making a fire or cooking with the women.
Make your way to a local school in the nearby area where there are children of all ages. Here your guide will take you on a tour of the school grounds and if it is during learning hours undoubtedly you will be greeted with enthusiasm and excitement by the children and teachers.
Once you have had your fill of the realities of life in the Maasai Mara, head back to your vehicle and transfer to your accommodation with your guide.
