Holidays to Mombasa, Kenya

Thanks to its busy port on the coast of the Indian Ocean, Mombasa is a melting pot of different cultures from across East Africa and Asia. Wake in the morning to the sound of the call to prayer over the Old Town or to the gentle hush of waves against the nearby coral beaches, and then get ready to step into a city that is like nowhere else in the world, thanks to its heady mix of modern city living, urban life and ancient sites.

Your first glimpse of the area may be a romantic one, perhaps of a traditional dhow disappearing over the horizon on its journey to Zanzibar, or the giant replica elephant tusks that greet all visitors on their approach to the city by road. Close by are the Uhuru Gardens, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the streets where you'll find fruit bats hanging from the park’s trees. From there, marvel at the towering walls of Fort Jesus, a 16th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site and Mombasa’s most-visited place. This architectural marvel is scored by centuries of graffiti written by those who have inhabited it, from Arabic inscriptions to more prosaic European remarks. Climbing its battlements, exploring the tree-shrouded grounds and maybe even joining in one of the ad-hoc football matches on the beach below are a must.

Over in the Old Town, the Spice Market offers visitors a glimpse of real urban life. It’s not just a visual experience either, as Mombasa’s residents wheel and deal for the best prices - the smells of fresh cardamom, curry powders and other herbs and spices set the mouth watering. Thankfully, street vendors on nearby Langoni Road are ready and waiting to serve up amazing traditional dishes to the hungry.

Get in touch with your spiritual side by visiting one of the city’s many religious buildings like the 16th-century Mandhry Mosque, a fine example of Swahili architecture, or the brightly painted Jain Temple. However, it’s the Lord Shiva Temple that really catches the eye, thanks to its enormous size, airy design and adjacent sculpture garden.

I really do think that Kenya is one of the most adventurous and fun safari destinations. Flying in a bi-plane over Lewa WIldlife Conservancy with a birds eye view of the giraffe and elephant below, I felt like I’d gone back in time to an older safari era.
