Holidays to Swakopmund, Namibia

With its seaside promenades, tree-lined streets and German-influenced architecture, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd taken a wrong turn and ended up on the north coast of Germany. The relatively cool temperature are a welcome respite from Namibia's sometimes stifling heat, making it a popular seaside destination for both Namibians and foreigners alike.

Being on the edge of the world's oldest desert, the Namib, Swakopmund can be used as a base for adventurers seeking some fun. Adrenaline junkies will love it here and can go quad biking, dune boarding or sand skiing down the world's biggest sand dunes. If you're looking for a more relaxing desert experience, a hot air balloon ride will provide you with an unforgettable experience. There are also plenty of half-day or day tours heading off into the dunes if you prefer to keep your feet on the ground.

If the sea is more up your street, then the head to the sands just north of Swakopmund. Here you'll find warm sands where you can relax and unwind. Enjoy a drink on the beach, or tuck into a plate of the famously delicious Swakopmund oysters as you enjoy the sunshine.

It's impossible to visit Swakopmund and not think of Germany. As a former German colony, the country's influence is evident in many of the buildings and the cuisine, but nowhere more than at the Brauhaus. With traditional Bavarian decor, widely spoken German and a vast array of draft beers on offer, it would be easy, especially after a couple of steins, to forget that you were on the edge of an African desert. The library of Swakopmund, inside the beautiful Woermannhaus, is said to be the best in Africa and is worth seeing just for the building alone.

If you’re looking for wide open spaces and an ‘other-worldly-feel’ to your holiday, then Namibia is your best location in southern Africa. I drove from Sossusvlei area all the way to Swakopmund with a friend of mine, where all of a sudden, the desert descends and you reach coast, surrounded by palm trees; it is a phenomenal contrast and gives one a great sense of achievement having driven all that way.
