Holidays to Twyfelfontein, Namibia

The north-west region of Namibia is often synonymous with its stark coastline, which is home to one of the world’s largest Cape fur seal colonies. But make no mistake - this is also an area steeped in ancient history and wonder.

Twyfelfontein's name translates in Afrikaans to 'uncertain spring' as a tribute to the efforts of settlers to try and extract the local water supply, but one thing which is definitely not in doubt is the huge cultural importance of its captivating rock art. So much so, in fact, that in 2007 the site became Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A visit to the site is like enjoying a trip to one of ancient history’s finest art galleries. Thought to be up to 6,000 years old, the images depict a range of animals and are believed to be a tribute and celebration of the hunter-gatherer culture which was so important in this region throughout the centuries.

History is everywhere you look when you head to Twyfelfontein and the surrounding area, as during your trip you will also have the opportunity to see one of the national monuments - the Petrified Forest. Although perhaps not as grand as the name suggests, the area’s fossilised tree trunks are a fascinating sight and are thought to have been washed to the area around 280 million years ago.

Other incredible ancient wonders include the Organ Pipes, a geological formation of columns not unlike Northern Ireland’s Giants Causeway, and the Burnt Mountain, a hill on a volcanic ridge which is famous for bursting into colour at dusk.

With incredible landscape and a rich history to explore, Twyfelfontein and the north-west region of Namibia truly is one of Africa’s great treasures.
