Holidays to Cyangugu, Rwanda

Situated on the southern tip of Lake Kivu, Cyangugu, also known as Rusizi, is considered one of the prettiest places in Rwanda. If a mellow, laid-back break is what you're looking for, this is a place to seriously consider. Life moves that little bit slower in Cyangugu and the town consists mainly of two areas – Kamembe, the commercial area where tea and cotton are processed, and Cyangugu itself.

The top thing to do in Cyangugu is right on its doorstep. Lake Kivu is one of Africa's Great Lakes and is fully deserving of such a reputation. Take a boat trip or simply catch a bite to eat or a drink at one of the hotels or guest houses by the lake. The sunset by Kivu is simply exceptional, and pictures of such a memory will make for amazing souvenirs.

Cyangugu is often considered as the perfect stop-off on the way to one of the main tourist spots of the area. Nyungwe National Park has been rated the highest priority for forest conservation in Africa. Nyungwe offers the opportunity to track tame chimpanzees, making such a meeting an unforgettable experience. As well as the adorable chimps, the rainforest valleys are home to Angolan colobus monkeys, Dent's monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, olive baboons, vervet monkeys and diademed monkeys.

There's some fantastic food to try at the bars and restaurants of Cyangugu. Highlights include small, crispy silvery fried fish, known as sambaza, fresh from Lake Kivu, and akabenzi, chunks of local pork usually cooked with bananas. Rwandan buffets are delicious, while more traditional fare such as burgers and fries are also available.

  • Take in the astounding views of Lake Kivu

Let's talk
I grew up near the picturesque fishing village of Rye, in East Sussex. However, my heart has always been in Africa since I was a young girl. Having a South African father meant my love for the history and colour of this fantastic continent has been a prominent part of my life, and so getting to travel to seven different countries over the last few years has been a dream come true. One of my highlights was flying in the famous yellow bi-plane across Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya.
