Holidays to Franschhoek, South Africa

The quaint town of Franschhoek is both visually pleasing and culinary sublime. Tucked away in a valley corner, the compact town is home to a charming mix of galleries, gourmet restaurants and boutique stores. Nestled in between imposing mountain ranges and endless vibrant vineyards, the surroundings really are something to behold.

The town's history dates back to the Huguenot refugees who fled to South Africa from France to escape persecution in the 17th century. It was these settlers who began planting vines and orchards in the region, and French influence can still be seen today. In fact the word Franschhoek translates as 'French corner'. There is a memorial to the Huguenots in Franschhoek, as well as a small museum, which are both definitely worth a visit.

The streets and sights of Franschhoek are best explored at a leisurely pace, a glass of local wine in hand. If you still have adventure on your mind whilst you are here there is plenty to keep you occupied; vineyard tours and tastings, horse riding and golf to name just a few.
