Holidays to the Garden Route, South Africa

Stretching 300 kilometres between South Africa’s Western and Eastern Capes, the Garden Route is a coastal path of raw, natural beauty. The route starts in Mossel Bay, a charming harbour town with warm climates, colourful wooden buildings and dozens of artisanal cafes and shops. The cove is overlooked by an iconic 19th-century watchtower – the Cape St Blaize Lighthouse – which you can hike up to for incredible vistas of the Indian Ocean.

If you don't fancy the uphill trek, the ground-level views are equally as jaw-dropping. Straight from a postcard, tall palm trees create a scenic backdrop for the pristine Santos Beach. Here you’ll find soft golden sands that fringe the azure sea, which is filled with fascinating marine life. Mossel Bay is famous for its shark cage diving – if you want an adrenalin-fuelled adventure, head out and get face-to-face with some of the ocean’s most fearsome predators.

Set in the heart of the route, Knysna is a lively harbourside town with tasty seafood restaurants, waterfront shopping and peaceful coves. Here you’ll find sweeping bays and craggy cliffs offset against vivid lagoons and stunning forests.

Further up the N2, you’ll reach Bloukrans Bridge. As Africa's highest bridge, here you can expect exceptional views of Nature Valley and the Bloukrans River that runs beneath. If you’re feeling fearless, this is also the world’s tallest commercial natural bungee jump and has played host to several world records.

Not to be outdone in the bridge-stakes, Storms River, the final stop on the Garden Route, has some impressive treks, with waterfalls, steep boardwalks and suspension bridges that straddle the mouth of the river.

Down on the Storms River, rafting, kayaking and tubing are all in full force, taking advantage of the river’s choppy rapids, deep pools and elevated turns.

For one of the most famous coastal paths in the world, the Garden Route has many curves, coves and trails that are relatively undiscovered. Drive the coastal path, trek the mountain ranges or head out to explore the underwater wilderness of the southern hemisphere.

I adore Africa and have lived and worked in South Africa as well as travelling across the wider region. Spotting a leopard during a night safari at Nambiti Private Game Reserve is definitely an experience I'll remember forever.
