Port Elizabeth

Dubbed the “friendly city”, Port Elizabeth has more than a few titbits on offer when it comes to cultural curiosities and natural wonders. Located on the malaria-free East Cape of South Africa, you’ll get the chance to get up close and personal to some of the country’s most spectacular wildlife, lounge around on pristine Blue Flag beaches, and soak up some serious culture haunts.

For beach lovers and outdoorsy types, there’s more than a few ways to spend your days. The city’s beaches stretch over 40km of coastline, typified by sparkling azure waters and spotless golden sand. Dotted in and around these sandy hideaways you’ll find a coastline full of magical secrets, from hidden lagoons to soaring cliffs and magical coves.

If stealing away to find a quiet spot to enjoy some me-time is your thing, this gives you more than a few options to go at, and for water-sports fans, there’s the option to scuba dive, snorkel or sail.

In the city, take time to explore some of its thought-provoking historic and cultural hotspots. Among the continual revamping of picturesque heritage buildings, you’ll find the likes of No 7 Castle Hill, one of the oldest settler cottages dating back to the 1830s.

And if that piques your interest, look into Route 67, a walk that spans a collection of 67 local artworks celebrating Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of work. Then there’s the numerous wildlife reserves in the area, where you can spot lions and elephants.

When it comes to eating out, the city caters for all tastes and budgets. Unsurprisingly, there’s a plenitude of fish restaurants, serving up the local catch of the day. Without too much effort you can also find a range of traditional restaurants, dishing up rich and spicy local fare. If you still have some energy left, the beachfront has a collection of clubs and bars where you can grab a drink and dance the night away.
