Lion in Katavi National Park
Holidays to Katavi National Park, Tanzania
Katavi National Park is Tanzania's third largest national park and, due to its remote location, remains one of its least visited by tourists. This gives it a truly untouched and unspoiled feel, and indeed the chances of you running into other unrelated parties are slim.
One of the best ways to take in the vast surroundings is by jeep, which - thanks to the knowledgeable local guides - can take you surprisingly close to the animals. Incredibly large 'bloats' – or herds – of hippos can be found, particularly close to the watering holes, along with impala, buffalo, topi, cheetahs, leopards, lions, elephants, giraffes, and all manner of other creatures great and small. If you have any specific requests, your guides will be sure to go out of their way to find them for you.
At night, the remote nature of the park pays off in another way – the night skies seen from camp are unlike any that you will have experienced back home, or even in towns and cities throughout the world. The sun sets fast here, and after a short - but breathtaking - sunset the constellations come out – and are clearer than almost anywhere else in the world.
On waking in camp, you might find you have new neighbours – curious monkeys and even elephants often stray into the vicinity, which can make for some unforgettable close encounters.
Elsewhere in Katavi, the Katuma River is well worth investigating – this year-round source of water is a hub for the animals, birds and plants which it sustains. Crocodiles can be spotted here, too. The seasonal floodplains of Lake Katavi and Lake Chada are also crucial to the ecosystem's flora and fauna, meaning they're wildlife hotspots when swollen.
Although much changes throughout the year at Katavi National Park, it remains a year-round paradise for nature lovers and adventurous travellers. The memories formed here will stay with you for the rest of your life.
