Chimpanzee in Mahale National Park, Tanzania
Holidays to Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania
Mahale Mountains National Park is a unique experience. Surrounded by breathtaking mountains, rainforests, clear waters and bright white sandy beaches, it's truly remote. The only way to get there is via boat on the beautiful Lake Tanganyika and, with no roads to be found, the park must be explored by foot. This makes the park feel authentic and untouched by mankind.
It's also one of only two protected areas for chimpanzees in Tanzania, with around 900 of the adorable animals residing, alongside lions, hippos, crocodiles, leopards and buffaloes. When trekking to see chimpanzees prepare yourself for some sweaty, steep climbing, but the chance to see these amazing creatures up close and personal is a tantalising prospect.
Although Mahale Mountains National Park is known mostly for its chimpanzee trekking, there is so much amazing scenery to take in. Fishing, swimming and snorkelling on the beaches is a must, but take care – these are only allowed in specific places due to a large population of crocodiles.
Hiking is also an incredible experience, but again, be prepared. Mount Nkungwe, the highest nearby peak, is a daunting 2,462 meters high, and if you plan on ascending you must be accompanied by an armed ranger. Bring your own food and equipment and spend several days experiencing the mountain, staying overnight halfway and at the summit.
This all adds up to a superlative adventure you'll be telling people about for the rest of your life. Would-be explorers will find Mahale Mountains National Park thrilling, exciting and unmissable.
