Holidays to Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe

Seeing elephants in their natural habitat is undoubtedly one of the greatest things on the planet. People have been coming on safari to Zimbabwe for decades to do just that. However, Gonarezhou National Park somehow manages to slip under the radar. This remote yet vast corner of the Masvingo Province stretches for nearly 2,000 square miles. That’s plenty of room for its most famous inhabitants, the elephants. Gonarezhou literally translates to ‘place of many elephants’, and there are more than 8,000 of these incredible creatures roaming around the national park.

It’s not easy exploring somewhere so vast. As is always the case in such arid landscapes it’s a good idea to search for water. Three major rivers, the Save, Runde, and Mwenezi, all run through Gonarezhou. They bring life to the area, with pools and natural oases that attract the park’s wonderful array of wildlife. As well as elephants, you can see lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, and rare species of antelope in Gonarezhou National Park. Keen birders can try to tick off some of the hundreds of species of birds that live here too (colourful bee-eaters being our particular favourite).

The area is not just famous for its wildlife though. The dramatic red sandstone Chilojo Cliffs are the product of millennia of erosion. They stand watch over the precipitous Runde River Valley and burn a fiery red when the sun hits them at the right angle. Last of all, make sure you seize the opportunity to see Zimbabwe’s iconic baobab trees, famed for their bulbous shape and ancient lifespan.
