Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort, Kinabatangan River
- Take in the views from your chalet’s private deck
- Ample opportunity to see exotic and rare wildlife
- Eco-friendly meets luxury
The Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort is located in the middle of a rainforest reserve, just 20 minutes drive from Sandakan, surrounded by pristine freshwater swampland and bountiful mangrove forests. The resort consists of a series of chalets built on stilts, with raised wooden walkways connecting the Longhouse Cabin and the ten private chalets to the main restaurant.
Everything here is done with the goal of preserving and conserving the rainforest that it calls home, including the use of solar generated power and rainwater that has been collected and sand filtered. However don’t think it’s completely back to nature - each chalet features the modern mod cons that most travellers want, including air conditioning, well-equipped bathroom facilities, and even TVs. The deluxe chalets also come with a private balcony area. Guests are even offered the opportunity to indulge in rustic outdoor showers if they so choose.
The site is recognised as an internationally important wetland for its undisturbed ecosystem. The Borneo Big 5 found nearby, which include rare and endangered species like the Sumatran Rhinoceros, Proboscis monkeys, the Borneo pygmy elephant, Oriental Darter and Rhinoceros Hornbill. You can trek out onto the local rivers for a shot at finding these wonderful creatures!
Chalets that combine luxury with eco-consciousness, set in the jungle with outdoor showers, plus the chance to see some of the world’s most exotic animals in between relaxing and adventuring? Who wouldn’t be interested!
