Holidays to Kratie, Cambodia
Set along the Mekong River, Kratie is a quaint, quiet town that makes the ideal stop-off point for travellers making their way to Laos from Phnom Penh. It comfortably ticks all the boxes for what you might expect from a restful resort in this region. Peaceful riverside setting – check. Charming French Colonial architecture – check. Lively central market full of produce, street food and assorted miscellaneous goods – check. But Kratie has plenty more to offer if you know where to look.
Just offshore lies Koh Trong, a lush island with golden beaches, temples and a floating village. Catch the no-frills ferry across, hire a bike at the other end and cycle the eight kilometre or so round the circumference. Aaaaaaaand relax… Around 10 km out of town you’ll find Phnom Sambok Pagoda. You’ll need to climb 300-odd steps to get to it, but it’s well worth the effort. The steps up to the pagoda are lined with colourful statues of monks and Buddhas, while the inside features macabre paintings of torture scenes – a chilling reminder of what’s in store if you don’t live a pious life.
Travel a little further and you’ll get to the area’s main attraction – a pod of endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. Kampi, a small riverside village, is the best place to see them and has a flourishing eco-tour business to help you get the most out of your aquatic encounter. Buy a ticket and you’ll be taken out by boat so you can come face-to-fin with these beautiful, shy creatures. When you arrive back in Kratie, join locals and tourists alike along the riverfront, grab a refreshing tukalok fruit shake from one of the stalls that pop up here every evening, and kick back to drink in one of the most spectacular sunsets you’ll see in Cambodia.
