Free the Bears, Phnom Penh

Today’s tour starts early at 07:30 when you’ll set off to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, a tranquil forested sanctuary around an hour’s drive from Phnom Penh. You’ll be welcomed by the local staff who will give you an insight into the centre’s mission, and explain your day’s itinerary.

Your tour continues with a walk around the 7-hectare site accompanied by a caretaker. You’ll see over 100 Asian Sun Bears and black bears who have been rescued from poachers, and learn more about Cambodia’s wildlife trade. There are over 1,200 animals in total at the center, including elephants and gibbons, who are being rehabilitated and cared for at Phnom Tamao. Although the animals are fenced off, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to observe them. Join the caretakers to feed the bears and watch the gibbons as they swing between the trees.

A delicious picnic lunch will be served in a bamboo hut at the centre. Saying goodbye to the staff and animals, you’ll wrap up your Phnom Tamao tour and drive to Tonle Bati temple, a small Angkorian-style temple which has been incredibly preserved. Sitting alongside a lake, it’s a popular place for locals to visit on the weekend to escape the city streets. Enjoy a short visit of the temple before returning to your hotel in Phnom Penh.

Please note: Animals at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre are never handled or forced in any way.

Cambodia is such a diverse an interesting country, with beautiful nature and some of the world’s most incredible temples. The bike ride I embarked on through the ancient city of Angkor is definitely one of my most treasured memories.
