Preah Vihear Temple Tour, Preah Vihear

Today you’ll visit the awe-inspiring Preah Vihear temple, set atop a 525-metre plateau overlooking Thailand and Cambodia, just 100 metres from the Thai border.  The two countries fought for ownership of the temple for many years, but in 1962 International Court of Justice ruled that the temple is in Cambodia. In 2008 Preah Vihear was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Upon arrival, you’ll hop into a pick-up truck operated by the local community for the steep climb up the rugged mountain road. At the top you’ll be afforded spectacular views that stretch for miles across the fertile plains below and Cambodian jungle to the south. The temple comprised a series of sanctuaries over 800 metres long, and whiles its exact history is unknown, it is believed to have been built during the reign of King Suryavarman I (1002-105). Despite its age, the beautiful Hindu carvings and lintels are remarkably well preserved. Explore the hilltop monument, admiring the building as well as the stunning views. Before returning to the base of the mountain, enjoy a picnic lunch in this scenic spot.
