Holidays to Chengdu, China
Chengdu is a gateway to some of the most beautiful parts of the Chinese countryside, including the Jiuzhaigou nature reserve and Qingcheng mountain. But before you use Chengdu simply as a jumping off point to discover other places, spend a little time in this curiously laid-back city. The city’s teahouse culture certainly contributes to the slower pace of Chengdu. With the staff serving up bottomless cups of tea, hours can be whiled away in these sociable teahouses where visitors play traditional games, or even catch an opera performance.
The Giant Panda Breeding Research Base is one of the city’s most popular attractions. Dozens of pandas live in large enclosures and offer a wonderful opportunity to see these animals up-close and learn more about how they live. If you visit in the autumn or winter, you might even be lucky enough to spot a cub!
Chengdu was the first city in Asia to have its cuisine recognised by UNESCO - and for good reason. The Sichuanese food is divine whether it’s on a plate in a fine dining restaurant or cradled in your hands from a street food stall. Try dan dan mian (noodles) and dou hua (flowery bean curd) or if you’re brave, sample the city’s famous hotpot, an eye-wateringly fiery dish that blends chilli and Sichuan pepper. Despite its taste-bud numbing capabilities, it’s extremely popular and sold on the food stalls that are found all over Chengdu.
