Holidays to Dali, China

In China's southwestern province of Yunnan, the town of Dali is a laid-back kind of place, attracting western and Chinese tourists alike. They come here to discover the indigenous Bai population and the beautiful ancient architecture, but there’s a relaxed café and restaurant scene here that makes it an easy place to spend a few days.

The elegant and towering Three Pagodas form a perfect triangle and are incredibly well preserved, especially since they’ve endured many earthquakes since they were built in the mid-ninth century. They reflect in Juying Chi lake and are prettily lit at night. You can’t go inside the pagodas, but the Chongsheng Temple behind them has been converted into a museum if you’re keen to learn more about these iconic early structures.

To the east of the town is Erhai, a large lake. Take a leisurely boat trip around the lake to enjoy the loveliness of the area. The backdrop of the town is the Cangshan mountain range, comprising seventeen peaks that are often shrouded in cloud, but inviting for cyclists and walkers nevertheless. If you’re short of time in the area, choose one of the three cable car routes that ascend the mountains. You’ll be able to spot Dali and Erhai Lake on your way up, and appreciate the diverse mountain scenery, from the pine forests and alpine lakes to the snow-capped crests.

Sandwiched between Erhai Lake and the Cangshan mountains is Xizhou Village. Its heyday was in the Ming Dynasty when it was home to wealthy tea merchants. Today, visitors can enjoy the Bai architecture, including the Yan Compound and Hou Compound mansions. Lose yourself for a while in the brightly coloured markets where food and local handicrafts are sold.
