Dunhuang Crescent Lake, China
Holidays to Dunhuang, China
Dunhuang is one of China’s most important centres – historically, culturally, and naturally. It was an important gathering point on the ancient Silk Route – hosting caravans of nomads bringing trading wares from the Middle East to China and back, as well as Buddhist monks acting as missionaries. Because of this, you can sample some of China’s most exciting food; influenced by traditional northern Chinese cooking and culinary knowledge from the Middle East.
An important centre for Buddhism, Dunhuang is home to the Mogao Grottoes, or caves, where you can witness spectacular Buddhist cave paintings and statues, created over ten dynasties and influenced by the styles of many of artists. There are around 700 surviving caves housing 50,000 monuments of artistic, written and sculpted art, dating back to the 4th to 6th centuries.
West of Dunhuang, you can visit two of the Great Wall of China’s most westerly strongholds: Yangguan and Yumenguan. You won’t see miles of reconstructed, perfect crenulations; but what you will find is authentic and original beacon towers and fortresses, plus some crumbling original sections of the Wall.
South of Dunhuang, do not miss the Singing Sand Dunes. This is a giant adult sandpit where you can clamber to the top of the dunes to get an incredible view across the desert and over the famous Crescent Moon Lake. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try sliding down the dunes, or even going for a high-speed dune buggy ride!
