Holidays to Kunming, China

Kunming is the largest city in the province of Yunnan in southwest China. It’s 1,900 metres above sea level and enjoys a lovely climate all year round, hence its nickname – City of Eternal Spring.

You won’t just love it if you crave the feeling of the warm sun on your skin. No, there’s more to this city than sunshine. It’s one of China’s most laidback and cosmopolitan cities, with the region’s minority cultures and ethnic groups living alongside each other, including Yi, Bai, Miao, Dai and Hani populations. Happily for visitors, this means colourful and vibrant festivals happen year-round and can be wonderful spectacles to enjoy.

There are plenty of shopping opportunities as many of the old neighbourhoods have given way to mega malls to satiate the Chinese appetite for retail therapy. But if you want to peel back the layers of this metropolis, some of the old alleyways and buildings can still be found, hidden amongst the conurbation of modern day Kunming.

Elsewhere in the city is Green Lake. The park around it is a popular place to stroll and people-watch from the teahouses that line the streets around it. Expect to see some lakeside tai chi and join in if you’re keen.

Outside of Kunming, one of the major attractions is the mysterious and magnificent Stone Forest. Incredible karsts rise from the ground, creating the illusion of a forest. Among these giant and imposing pinnacles are caves, waterfalls and lakes, making it an enthralling place to spend a day exploring.

Come evening, back in town, Kunming’s foodie scene has always been widely applauded, so you’re in for a treat if you’ve come to savour the flavours of China. After the sun goes down, Kunming’s student population helps gee along a buzzy nightlife. There’s an interesting mix of karaoke stalls and street performers too.
