Holidays to Pingyao, China

Between Beijing and Xi'an in north China sits the ancient city of Pingyao. It’s home of the former Ri Sheng Chang Bank. When the bank opened in 1823, it was the first in China and it established Pingyao as the financial capital of the empire. Of course, it no longer holds such a claim, but the town has retained its olde-worlde feel with pretty red lanterns hanging from the lanes, a plethora of ancient temples and towers and a remarkably well-preserved wall. Its these charming assets that pique travellers’ interests who delight in this time capsule of ancient China.

The magnificent wall dates from 1370 and it’s one of the most complete in the nation. It rises more than ten metres high with a city circumference of six kilometres and punctuated with 72 watchtowers. A walk or a cycle around the wall gets you well-acquainted with the city on your first day here, before delving into the city itself.

In the sprawling Confucius Temple complex is Pingyao’s oldest surviving building - Dacheng Hall that dates from 1163. You won’t want to miss the Shuanglin Temple either. It houses more than 2,000 sculptures from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Once your mind is brimming with newly acquired knowledge of Chinese history, use Pingyao as a base to visit the Mian Shan mountain. A bracing (but easy) hiking trail guides you past temple architecture balancing precariously on the sheer cliff faces.
