Holidays to Shanghai

Shanghai is China’s most westernised city. It’s a glossy metropolis of extraordinary skyscrapers, luxury shopping and and efficient public transport system. It has a decidedly business-like atmosphere, but behind the shiny glass and ultra-modern facade, plenty of the romance of old Shanghai remains.

In this city of imposing skyscrapers, you can’t miss ascending one to catch the tummy-turning view from the top. It’s actually a pretty good way of getting your bearings. Head skyward up the tallest, the Shanghai Tower, to experience the observation deck on the 118th floor – it’s one of the highest in the world. Of course, you might want to visit the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower too. Its space-age style design makes it one of the most recognisable structures in the Shanghai cityscape and it boasts fifteen observatory levels.

Back on terra firma, get further acquainted with this city with a stroll along the waterfront promenade known as The Bund. Pleasingly, nothing much has changed here since Shanghai’s Golden Age a century ago, and it’s where you spot some beautiful colonial architecture. For even more quaint colonial buildings, head to the tree-lined streets of the French Concession (probably the leafiest area in Shanghai) for its café scene and European-style mansions. Yet more beauty still can be discovered at the Yuyuan Gardens in Shanghai’s Old Town. In spring and summer, the air is gloriously perfumed with the scent from magnolia.

Although a little out of town, the Jade Buddha Temple warrants the journey. The Buddha itself is a spectacle, but the Incense Burning Area at the back is a sensory assault that’s worth experiencing!
