Zhangye Danxia National Geopark Tour, Silk Road

For those wanting to expand their Silk Road tour and delve into the depths of Gansu province, this is the perfect tour for you. Spend half a day on a private tour of the otherworldly Zhangye Danxia National Geopark. Also known as the Rainbow Mountains, this geopark is a transcendent land of swirling brown, yellow and orange 'mountains'. Sandstone erosion over thousands of years created weird and wonderful peaks and rocky outcrops, resulting in a mesmerising spectacle.

The fascinating landscape has drawn geologists and photographers here for years but since it was named a national park in 2011, access has been much easier and there are now stairs to a series of viewing platforms so visitors don’t damage the delicate landscape. You’ll be pointed to the best vantage points where you can spend some time seeing if you can identify shapes of creatures and beasts from the landforms. You’ll catch the Rainbow Mountains in the midday sun, when the colours are at their most vivid and fiery.

I became fluent in Mandarin during my time living, studying and working in China. From there I travelled to every corner of China and explored Japan and Taiwan. Beijing is my favourite city, I love finding amazing places to eat and trying new dishes.
