Holidays to Xi'an, China

Xi’an, in China’s Shanxi Province, is probably on your travel radar because it’s home to the Army of Terracotta Warriors. Thousands and thousands of life-size clay soldiers were uncovered here in 1974 in one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in the world. They’re thought to be part of an extravagant mausoleum created to accompany the first emperor of China into the afterlife. It’s a dazzling spectacle that’s well worth visiting on your trip to China.

It’s not just the Terracotta Army that marks ancient China in Xi’an. The Ming-era city walls from 1370 remain impressively intact, standing almost 40 feet high and over eight miles long. Hire bikes to cycle the circumference of the wall and try and plan your time to be up there at sunset for a beautiful city view.

Xi’an jostles for position as China’s best culinary city. The city’s biangbiang noodles are worth trying, as is the baijiu, Xi’an’s signature drink. Take a stroll through the busy maze of streets that make up Xi’an’s Muslim Quarter and sample food from the Islamic food market. It’s a particularly atmospheric place at night. Although locals tend to skip the busy streets of the Muslim Quarter and find a hutong, or narrow alleyway, outside the centre instead.
