Yangtze River Cruises, China

The famous Yangtze River forges its way through almost 4,000 miles of China, roughly separating this expansive country into north and south. It starts high in the Tibetan hills, in the so-called Upper Reaches of the Yangtze. Most river cruises start way downriver and are concentrated in a 1,400 mile stretch of river between Chongqing and Shanghai, with the highlight being the three night cruise from Chongqing to Yichang.

A Yangtze river cruise is a savvy way to get the most out of your time in China. You’ll get to see a large and diverse area of the country by travelling overnight between destinations. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the scenery when you stop in ports before hopping back on-board to voyage further. One day you’ll find yourself immersed in the modern China of today, the next you could be plunged back into its ancient history and legend. As you travel between destinations, find a quiet spot on the deck to enjoy the beauty of the Yangtze and rural China drifting by.

A highlight of most cruises that explore the Yangtze are 'The Three Gorges', known as Xiling, Wu and Qutang. Each has a scenic cornucopia of canyons, waterfalls, sheer cliff faces and mist-shrouded peaks. The abundance of intrigue and legend in this dramatic section of landscape is easily experienced on a Yangtze River cruise. Whichever ship and itinerary you choose, you’ll find comfortable accommodation and excellent onboard facilities.

I became fluent in Mandarin during my time living, studying and working in China. From there I travelled to every corner of China and explored Japan and Taiwan. Beijing is my favourite city, I love finding amazing places to eat and trying new dishes.
