Holidays to Yuanyang, China

A couple of hours by road south of Yunnan’s provincial capital, Kunming, are the Yuanyang rice terraces in the Ailao Mountains.

When you arrive into Yuanyang county, there’s a chance you’ll wish you’d have upgraded your camera. At the very least, make sure the one you’ve got is fully charged. The sights here are incredible. And that’s because of the centuries old, carved rice terraces that are on every hillside, rolling on and on for miles. In winter, they’re arguably at their most spectacular, reflecting light and colour off the water (particularly at sunrise and sunset) that is utterly spellbinding. Although in summer they are beautiful too - lush and green and equally photogenic.

The best way to explore the rice terraces is by following the hiking trails that will guide you through hilltop villages of Qingkou and Bada with distinctive thatched houses belonging to the Hani people. Visit the sleepy town of Tonghai where locals meet to play mah-jong or perform opera.
