Pura Ulun Danu Temple, Bali
A surfing destination since the 1930s, Bali has become well known for its vibrant culture, and unspoilt natural landscapes - as well as those gnarly waves. One of Indonesia’s most popular destinations, the laidback lifestyle of the island and its blend of ancient culture and modern adventure makes it easy to appreciate the rich art traditions and stunning natural scenery, whether you decide to luxuriate on the white sand beaches, hike through the lush jungle, or find something special to take home among the creations of traditional craftsmen.
With the island’s majority Hindu population, spirituality and ritual suffuse day-to-day life, traditional dancers perform daily in the temples, and even in the cities nature is close by with courtyards packed with perfumed frangipani trees, a feature of many of the island’s luxe resorts. Beauty is everywhere you turn, from the carved stone buildings to the flower-strewn shrines at every doorway, to the colourful market stalls and open shop fronts.
Bursting with hidden treasures, it’s difficult to know where to begin in Bali, though you can be sure that you will find paradise, wherever you go. For the traditional surfer’s pilgrimage, check out the easy-going beach towns at Sanur, with its long, right-hander waves. At the south of the island, Nusa Dua is your go-to place for diving expeditions exploring the spectacular reefs of the coral triangle, or relaxing on the stunning white sand beaches.
Board a traditional, brightly coloured jukung outrigger at dawn in Lovina, to watch the sunrise and the dolphins frolicking in the waves, or head north to Menjangan Island, named after the rare native deer, and a part of the West Bali National Park which features pristine natural savannahs, beautiful temples, and is surrounded by clear, calm waters with teeming coral gardens.
If you’d rather brave the jungle, why not head inland to the hidden mountain gems of Munduk’s hiking trails, or get up close to the native wildlife at Ubud’s famous monkey temple. Whichever way you choose, prepare to be enchanted by Bali’s unique charm and spectacular beauty.
