Two nights of wildlife exploration await with this inviting stay on a traditional Kalimantan Jungle Houseboat. Get ready to cruise along the lively riverbanks, learning all about Indonesian preservation and delighting at the unique ecology.
On your first day, you’ll sit back and enjoy a gentle cruise taking you along the waters, all the way up to the stunning surroundings of Camp Leakey. Located in the Tanjung Puting reserve, this idyllic haven is a refuge for older orangutans, and is where they will eventually be released into the depths of the surrounding rainforest. Take delight as you sit back and spot them swing through the trees, past the simple wooden structures that form the base for scientists and park rangers to undertake their work.
Here, you will also have the opportunity to pull on your walking boots and trek into the jungle. A walk like no other, you’ll wander past the bright shades of flora, spotting wild orangutans alongside their cheeky gibbon counterparts and the swooping limbs of majestic macaques, and colourful bird life. As the day continues on, you’ll head to the feeding station and watch whilst the rehabilitated Borneo orangutans are fed. A truly unique experience, you’ll be captivated by these gentle creatures. Taking lasting memories with you, you’ll then head back towards your houseboat and sail down the river, spending a magical night on board.
In the evening, you’ll trek the moonlit trails, and see how many nocturnal animals you can spot lurking in the lush forest wilderness. Then it’s back to the luxuries of your houseboat, where you can dine on fine Indonesian cuisine, before bedding down for a peaceful slumber.
Wake up to a bountiful breakfast on board before setting out on an early morning river safari. There really is no better way to soak up the distinctive ecology of the natural area, and marvel at the many forms of wildlife nestled along the riverbanks.
En route, you’ll stop off at the Pondok Tanggui Feeding Station for some more fun-filled moments as the rangers hand feed the orangutans. Continue on with your trip of exploration as you uncover the exotic vegetation of Pesalat Station. Swathed in gibbon song, your ears will also absorb the stories of the famous red-barked Ironwood. This is also a chance to observe the reforestation activities of the area, and make a donation if you wish.
Feast on a delectable lunch, served on board, and watch out for further wild animal sightings. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some unique animal activities along the riverside. Then it’s onto the final unforgettable experience, with a visit to the Tanjung Harapan Feeding Station. Here, you can revel in the impressive stature of the cheeky orangutans, as they go about delving into their dinner!
Naturally picturesque views abound on your travels back, where a mouth-watering dinner and your final overnight stay are waiting.
