Holidays to Mount Bromo, Indonesia

Named for the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god, Mount Bromo, part of the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, certainly lives up to the blend of awe and unease conjured at such an association. One of the most popular and active volcanoes in Indonesia, a brief glance at Mount Bromo will have you captivated.

White smoke and steam plumes from the vast crater - Bromo’s whole top has been blown off in some past cataclysm - and the wide, jagged stone crater is simply mesmerising. Surrounded by the Laut Pasir (the Sea of Sand) a vast stretch of fine volcanic sand, this bleak, sulphurous landscape is a stark contrast to the lush green jungles that surround the massive Tengger caldera.

Among this desolate beauty, the local Tenggerese people have a thriving culture centered on life in these tempestuous mountains, an isolated Hindu community whose ancient practices most resemble those found in Bali, the most visible and impressive monument of their faith is Poten temple, located in the midst of the Laut Pasir itself.

Ragged, barren volcanic peaks and lush river-fed jungles, this is a land of spectacular and unforgettable contrasts.
