Holidays to Kanazawa, Japan

Explore the endless cultural offerings of the beautiful city of Kanazawa, bordered by the stunning Japanese Alps and the Sea of Japan. With streets lined with cherry blossoms and an array of cultural attractions, it’s no wonder that the historic jewel of Kanazawa is a main draw of the Hokuriku region. In the Edo era, Kanazawa was one of the top five cities in Japan alongside Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya.

Now, this city is rich in real history and a serene atmosphere. The most well-known feature of the city is the Kenroku-en castle, which dates from the seventeenth century, and features stunning Japanese gardens, covering over eleven hectares of land, and dotted with hills and houses. The artificial pond, Kasumigaike, at the centre of the gardens, was constructed with a central island to wish long life and eternal prosperity to the feudal lord. Once you’ve roamed the ancient gardens, you can delve into the wonder of the beautifully preserved samurai and geisha districts and soak in the atmosphere.

Nagamachi is the samurai district, found at the foot of the former Kanazawa Castle, named so because this is where samurai and their families used to live. Meander through the earthen walls and narrow lanes, skim the water canals and peak and the private entrance gates in the a chance of spotting a samurai resident. Many travellers visit the Nomura-en - a restored samurai home - to truly get acquainted with the lifestyle and artefacts of samurai from their more prosperous era.

Wander down to the fringes of the city to explore the labyrinth of the geisha district. Once you’ve explored the historic districts, seek out the alluring temples amongst the blossom trees or search through a wealth of museums that reside in Kanazawa. Meander around the charming marketplace for regional handicrafts and local delicacies - a really pleasant way to round of your adventure in this historic location.

One of the things I love most about Japan is that it is a country of contrasts. From the vibrant, modern cities bustling with life to the tranquil countryside, interspersed with traditional villages and soothing landscapes. Also, let’s not forget the incredible Japanese cuisine. No matter where you go, the food is delicious! There are so many things that keep me coming back time and time again.
