Holidays to Vang Vieng, Laos

Nestled in a valley on the banks of the Nam Song river that flows past green paddy fields, Vang Vieng rose to fame for its popular party scene and self-proclaimed title of "tubing capital of Laos". Nowadays, the focus has switched to the amazing range of activities on offer in its towering mountains and snaking river. Climb up the dramatic limestone karsts, kayak your way around the gorgeous scenery and trek your way to the Water Cave. The narrow and low tunnel can get busy with in the morning and is only accessible in the dry season.

Famed for its caves, some filled with stalagmite and stalactite formations, the most famous of all is Tham Chang, a beautiful cavern fed by a natural spring that's accessed by a long flight of stairs. It was used as a bunker in the early nineteenth century to defend against marauders. The nearby Blue Lagoon is a great way to cool off after a bike ride along bumpy roads, with rope swings and ladders to hump form into the clear water below. You can also visit Tham Poukham, or “Cave of the Golden Crab’ where you’ll find a reclining Buddha, and stalagmite formations said to resemble golden crabs – hence its name. The first chamber is well-lit but you'll need a guide to help navigate any further into the tunnels.

The real reason visitors holiday in Vang Vieng is tubing, and now that the town is starting to shake off its backpacker status and there are fewer crowds, floating down the river is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. After an energetic day exploring, you’ll need something to satisfy your appetite, and there’s a surprising range of cuisines to choose from in Vang Vieng, from Korean food, Thai, Chinese and even a Mexican.
