Holidays to Singapore
Much more than a stopover destination, Singapore’s mishmash of Asian influences combine to make a vibrant melting pot, brought together by mouth-watering cuisine. Shop till you drop in Singapore City Centre in Chinatown's malls, stroll the streets of Little India and admire Hindu shrines, all in an afternoon. If you tire of city life, you’ll find theme parks, a rainforest and beaches to escape to. The Night Safari at the Singapore Zoo is a fantastic way to observe the nocturnal habits of over 1,000 animals, while the Gardens by the Bay, set in 100 hectares and featuring a futuristic skywalk and the world’s largest glasshouse, will leave you feeling inspired. If you're seeking entertainment, the man-made island of Sentosa will not disappoint.
From modern day to yesteryear, the collision of Asian cultures makes for a cultural assortment that even non-architecture aficionados will appreciate. Chinese shophouses, elegant temples, British colonial buildings and modern skyscrapers compete for space but the standout feature is the triple-towered Marina Bay Sands, the world’s most expensive – and more impressive – casino. After a day exploring you're bound to be peckish, and with 29 Michelin restaurants you know you’re in for a real culinary treat. But you’ll be glad to know eating well doesn’t have to break the bank – Singapore’s street food is among the best in Asia. You’ll find its most famous food export, the signature chilli crabs, on almost every menu but the real must-try is the Singapore Sling, created by the barman at the legendary Raffles Hotel in 1915.
Just a 15-minute bumboat ride from the mainland, Pulau Ubin, or “Granite Island” as it’s known locally, is one of the last undeveloped areas in Singapore. Home to just a handful of people, this “kampong” (village) is a paradise for nature lovers with lush vegetation, plenty of bird-watching opportunities, and hundreds of butterfly species flitting around the island. Be sure to visit the rich ecosystems of Chek Jawa, a large wetlands area that was only discovered in the early 21st century where a 1km coastal boardwalk will take you out to sea. Meanwhile the nature reserve at Bukit Timah is Singapore’s last remaining patch of rainforest, and offers a range of hiking trails, suitable for all abilities.
