Lumphini Park and the downtown Bangkok City Skyline, Thailand
The sprawling capital of Bangkok is most people’s first taste of Thailand. The chaotic, noisy streets can be an eye-opening experience and are a world away from the guide book pictures of Thailand’s tranquil temples, lush green landscapes and impeccable beaches. Yet Bangkok holds an inimitable Thai charm of its own and you’ll leave with a soft spot for the city.
The modern metropolis of Bangkok is a fast-paced place. Spiked with skyscrapers and glass architecture, Bangkok has all the hallmarks of a thoroughly contemporary city, but you can still sample old Bangkok in districts like Banglamphu with its antique shophouses and Chinatown where the smell of herbal medicines fill the air. Taking to the water can be the best way to get your bearings, crisscrossing Bangkok on the Chao Phraya River to see traditional homes on stilts and floating markets.
The colour throughout Bangkok is striking. An excess of bright neon-lit signs above multi-coloured market produce and a rainbow of textiles are simply dazzling. Then there’s the decadent gold-gilded palaces like the Grand Palace and Wat Arun. The huge Reclining Buddha at Wat Po is a sight to behold – its smile alone is five metres wide and is lavishly inlaid with mother of pearl. Solid gold Buddha images can be admired at Wat Traimit and the Marble Temple of Wat Benjamaphorphit. The extravagance of the temples and Buddha images will have your eyes sparkling.
You can lose yourself for hours in the city’s enormous markets. The Chatuchak market alone has over 15,000 stalls with every conceivable item for sale. Just make sure you barter – it’s expected, part of the fun and a little like a better episode of Bargain Hunt. For post-shopping snacks, the markets all have plenty of traditional eateries selling spicy and sour Thai delicacies that you’ll quickly get a taste for.
Nightlife in Bangkok is exciting and varied. It’s moved on from the seediness it once was reputed for and now has a scene that rivals other world cities, with upmarket cocktail lounges and rooftop bars. Evenings are also a good opportunity to experience something a little authentically Thai, with puppet theatre shows and classical dancing.
