Holidays to Halong Bay, Vietnam
Halong Bay is regarded as one of the jewels in Asia’s crown, and it’s obvious why. The emerald green waters are sprinkled with thousands of limestone karst islands, hidden grottoes and dramatics caves, making for unforgettable scenery. Legend has it the limestone pillars that emerge from the water were created by a dragon crashing down from the surrounding mountains, creating jagged islands and hidden caves.
As you cruise through the bay keep your eyes peeled for Dao Ga Choi, two jagged rocks said to resemble fighting cockerels (we’ll let you be the judge of that). The climb up the 420 steps to the peak of Titop Island, named after the Soviet astronaut, rewards you with the most spectacular views of the bay, particularly at sunset. The beach that wraps round the island is just gorgeous, and perfect for swimming all year round with warm waters and opportunity to spot shoals of small fish.
Bai Tui Long National Park, meaning “the place where the dragon children descended", is the remote neighbour of Halong Bay. Its diverse ecosystem is home to varied marine life and coral, while in the rainforests, rare animals including the rhesus macaque and serow can be found hiding among the mangroves. Hiring a kayak is the best way to explore the floating villages, and beaches that form at the base of the bay’s protruding towers.
Staying onboard a Vietnamese junk boat is the best way to get around, and immerse yourself in the spectacular landscapes. You’ll wake up in the heart of the bay and enjoy stunning sunsets over dinner – simply unforgettable.
