Holidays to Hanoi, Vietnam

A holiday to Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, is an assault on the senses. Surrounded by the constant noise of scooters, you’ll stumble upon colonial architecture, influenced by the French and Chinese, while at the markets you’ll be hit with the mouth-watering smell of exotic spices. The charming Old Quarter offers respite from the heaving city centre, and you’ll be instantly enchanted by its maze of winding alleyways. Cafés, workshops and bazaars spill out on to the streets, each named after traditional products that were once sold there, while the street food scene is second to none.

The old citadel of Hanoi was once the residence of Vietnamese monarchs, and here you’ll find Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum, the resting place of the country’s most popular leader. Be sure to dress respectfully with covered shoulders and knees. Nearby, the revered One Pillar Pagoda is said to represent a lotus flower growing up out of the water. Locals believe praying here will invoke prosperity, health and fertility. The final attraction of the citadel is the Temple of Literature and its ancient walled gardens, one of the city’s most picturesque sights.

If you’re looking for light entertainment, take in a show at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. Based on a 1000-year-old tradition, kids of all ages will love the dancing puppets which depict folk tales and legends set to folk music played by an orchestra. Another specialty of Hanoi is its silk and tailored goods. Head for Hang Gai Street, the so-called “Silk Street”, where you can pick up beautiful silk scarves and pyjamas, and made-to-measure suits and dresses.

For a high-brow experience, the elegant Hanoi Opera House is a real treat. Modelled on the Opera Garnier, the ornate décor is only topped by the fabulous classical performances you can enjoy.

The simple memory of eating a bowl of Pho whilst watching the sunset in Halong Bay is one of my fondest from my time living in Vietnam. The wonderful warm people, incredible nature and fantastic food of Vietnam will always keep me coming back.
