Holidays to Lang Co, Vietnam

Although not an island, a holiday to Lang Co will have you feeling like a castaway - its sleepy town, enormous freshwater lagoon and soft sandy beaches all add to its tropical vibe. Driving along the Hai Van Pass, the old highway used prior to the construction of the new tunnel, you’ll be astounded by the scenery on your way to Lang Co. The views from the top over the Truong Son Mountain range and the East Sea are unparalleled, and on a clear day you can even make out the Marble Mountains in Danang. Ruins of old war-houses and gun turrets from the American War remain, and there’s a few small coffee houses to stop at while you admire the view.

However, it’s the beaches that are the real star here. The crescent-shaped sands are blissfully undeveloped, with just a few oyster shacks and low-key restaurants dotted about. On one side of the attractive peninsula you have views of the lagoon, and on the other, the Pacific Ocean. The turquoise lagoon yields mussels, oysters and clams, supplying the stilted seafood restaurants that overlook the water with their daily catch. Take a bike ride round the lagoon, following the narrow road, and you’ll spot the fisherman trawling for their daily catch, while women sit and collect cockles.

If you want to explore the mountains that look over the beaches, head inland to Ba Na Hills. Formerly a hill station established by the French, this area is one of the prettiest in Vietnam thanks to its colonial buildings and scenery. A five kilometre journey on the cable car, the world’s longest, will take you over dense jungle and waterfalls to the summit, where you’ll find the Linh Ung pagoda and the enormous Buddha, visible for miles around. Carry on up the mountain to the replica French village where the town square, church and hotel might just have you believing you’ve been transported to an alpine village in France. There’s even an old French wine cellar where you can sample locally-grown wine!

The simple memory of eating a bowl of Pho whilst watching the sunset in Halong Bay is one of my fondest from my time living in Vietnam. The wonderful warm people, incredible nature and fantastic food of Vietnam will always keep me coming back.
