Holidays to the Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Meandering along the rivers of the Mekong Delta, you might begin to think you’ve entered another country. The flatlands that make up the so-called “rice bowl of Vietnam” house floating markets, sleepy villages, and local communities among its paddy fields and swamplands. While the settlements of the Delta are basic compared to the country’s large resorts, they offer a real insight into life for so many of Vietnam’s residents.
Just a short day trip from Saigon, My Tho is the gateway to the Mekong Delta, and an important market town. Founded by Chinese refugees fleeing Taiwan in the 1680s, the town is the commercial hub of the region, and a stroll along its riverfront is a great way to see the local businesses and houses. The sprawling Vinh Trang Pagoda, with its giant three Buddha statues which tower over the vast complex and ornamental gardens, is a tranquil stop just a short distance outside of town.
The lively market of Trung Trac faces onto the Bao Dinh Channel, selling an array of locally-grown exotic fruits, fresh fish and dried goods. Be sure to try the local speciality “hu tieu My Tho” – a delicious pork and prawn noodle soup. Next to the market, wooden decorated boats depart for the offshore islands that lie across the Tien River. A boat ride will take you across the water channels to the offshore islands of the Mekong where you’ll be rowed through palm-fringed canals to visit coconut candy factories, honey farms (try the banana wine), and orchid gardens.
Just a short drive from Saigon, this will feel like a different world
