Holidays to Ninh Binh, Vietnam

Relatively unknown by Western visitors, Ninh Binh has little to offer itself but is a good base for exploring the surrounding countryside. The karst scenery around the village of Tam Coc is often referred to as "Halong Bay on land” and a boat ride past the paddy fields and through tunnels carved out by the river is a journey you’ll never forget – head out early to avoid the crowds. For a bird’s-eye view of the province, the peak of Hang Mua is the best viewpoint with lush rice paddies on one side, and the winding river on the other. 450 steps bring you to the summit, and you can cool off in the small lake in the cave on your way back down.

If you just can’t get enough of the limestone scenery, a boat trip out to the UNESCO listed, and lesser visited, Trang An grottoes will take you past soaring forested cliffs to a series of dimly-lit caves that can be accessed by boat. You can hop off to explore temples and admire the stalagmites that form within the damp grottoes. Start your tour early to avoid the heat, and be sure to bring a hat and plenty of water.

The other main attraction of the province is Bich Dong Pagoda, a series of three fifteenth century pagodas set into the mountainside. A steep walk up the stone steps and through the ‘Dark Cave’ brings you to the final temple where you’ll have panoramic views of the limestone ridges and rice fields below. Meanwhile, the vast and decidedly modern pagoda of Bai Dinh is Vietnam’s largest – be prepared for a lot of walking to cover the complex.

Nature lovers should be sure to visit Cuc Phuong, Vietnam’s largest and most impressive national park. The Endangered Primates Rescue Centre near the park entrance rehabilitates and releases rare langurs, lorises and gibbons back into the wild, but can only be visited with a guide.

The simple memory of eating a bowl of Pho whilst watching the sunset in Halong Bay is one of my fondest from my time living in Vietnam. The wonderful warm people, incredible nature and fantastic food of Vietnam will always keep me coming back.
