Holidays to Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand

You’ll find Abel Tasman National Park at the north end of South Island. It’s an area of forested country that sits on the coast, overlooking the waters of Golden Bay and Tasman Bay. For over 500 years Maori lived here, gathering their food from the sea and forests until the area was later settled by Europeans.

Abel Tasman is one of New Zealand’s smaller national parks, but it’s crammed with gorgeous scenery that can be easily explored alone, in a small tour, or with the help of a private guide. The sublime forest-fringed, golden-sanded bays and secluded coves are particular highlights of the park that can be discovered by following the famous Abel Tasman Coastal Track. The entire track covers 60 kilometres, so unless you want to dedicate a few days to explore its entirety, you can choose small sections of it to tackle. The natural rock pool of Cleopatra's Pool is a popular stop - its crystal-clear water and mossy rocks make a picturesque setting. Or cross the long suspension bridge to Falls River for an exhilarating walk over some incredible scenery. Those who are really pushed for time (or travelling with children) tend to opt for the short and easy-going walk through native bush that leads to the Wainui Falls. There’s a long swing bridge for kids who might also enjoy looking out for the giant carnivorous snails (yes, really!).

Intrepid explorers may choose to take to the water by sea kayak to sight the impressive views back to land, paddling into secret bays that can’t be reached on foot. Kayaking is also a good way to spot some of Abel Tasman’s diverse wildlife, from playful seals and dolphins to an abundance of birdlife. Keen mountain bikers can follow the Gibbs Hill Track that ascends the craggy terrain to catch some soaring views from up high.

Highlights

  • Walk and explore the scenery for hours (or days) – the choice is yours

  • Spot tui and bellbirds in the forest

  • Head out on a sea kayak for an ocean adventure

Let's talk
After a flying visit out to see friends many years ago, New Zealand has well and truly captured my heart and will forever be my spiritual home. I have since spent over a year living and working in various locations across the country, including the incredible and remote Stewart Island. The adventurous and charming locals, unbelievable vistas, world class wine and unique and fascinating wildlife keep me making the journey back out year after year. You really do have to see it for yourself!
