Holidays to Christchurch, New Zealand

Pretty, English-style Christchurch is a must-stop destination on most New Zealand itineraries. It’s the largest city on South Island and is experiencing a resurgence following the devastating earthquakes that hit in 2010 and 2011 – along with a staggering 2500 aftershocks. Despite the ferocity of the quakes, some of the city’s most treasured historic buildings survived, including the Italianate Old Post Office and the adjacent Government Building that still give Christchurch its wonderfully nostalgic feel.

The vintage tram that makes a loop around Christchurch’s highlights is an excellent way to move around the city and learn a little more about its history from the driver commentary. You can hop-on and hop-off, taking time to explore places like Cathedral Square and New Regent Street. Or you can simply sit back and enjoy the 60-minute circuit.

Hagley Park is home to Christchurch’s famed Botanic Gardens. It’s a community hub, and if you visit on a weekend, it’s where you’ll find a hive of sporting activities and families spending time outdoors. Amble through the flower-filled spaces and take your children to the playground or enjoy some downtime in the park’s café.

Quake City, a museum in the centre of the city, is well worth a visit to understand the impact the earthquakes had on Christchurch and how the city has rallied to rebuild. Elsewhere, the Canterbury Museum reveals more about Christchurch’s colonial past and displays beautiful Māori artefacts. And the kids will love the collection of dinosaur bones on show too.

Christchurch is an excellent base for exploring the beauty of the surrounding area. You can board the TranzCoastal train from the city to visit the spectacular east coast. Or head to Kaikoura where there’s the chance to swim with dolphins.

After a flying visit out to see friends many years ago, New Zealand has well and truly captured my heart and will forever be my spiritual home. I have since spent over a year living and working in various locations across the country, including the incredible and remote Stewart Island. The adventurous and charming locals, unbelievable vistas, world class wine and unique and fascinating wildlife keep me making the journey back out year after year. You really do have to see it for yourself!
