Holidays to Dunedin, New Zealand
Dunedin is a city on the southeast coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Steadfastly proud of its Scottish heritage, don’t be surprised to hear a drone of bagpipes in the distance or the offer of haggis on a local menu in Dunedin. It even has its own tartan. But its influences extend beyond Scotland – Dunedin is also reputed to be one of the best-preserved Victorian and Edwardian heritage cities in the southern hemisphere. And of course, Māori influences are never far away either.
It’s New Zealand’s 7th largest city, although arguably one of its liveliest, thanks to the thriving university population. It’s an energetic place to spend an evening, with dynamic bars and restaurants. The city has its own brewery that offers short tours and tastings if sampling the local tipple takes your fancy. If you’re travelling with your family, there’s a lovely botanical garden to explore with a playground, café, miniature railway and obligatory duck feeding.
Dunedin is often used as a base to explore the nearby Otago Peninsula, home to albatross, sealions and a rare type of penguin – the yellow-eyed penguin. The region has many hiking and biking trails, making it easy for visitors to explore the spectacular landscape.
