Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, Greymouth, New Zealand
Holidays to Greymouth, New Zealand
The terminus of the Tranz-Alpine Railway, Greymouth is a popular starting point for those venturing down the South Island’s stunning West Coast. In Greymouth itself, you can visit Shantytown, a recreated Gold Mining Town which is a throwback to the town’s roots. It’s quirky and fun, and a good place to take the kids for an afternoon of playtime. There are also a few galleries with displays of jade.
We really recommend venturing further from the town. Rapahoe beach is wild and scenic, and on a good day you can see surfers in action. If you drive further north, don’t miss Punakaiki Pancake Rocks; reached by a well maintained and easy wooden walkway, the Pancake Rocks are an introduction to the kind of dramatic scenery and geology you can expect as you travel further into the South Island. There’s also a friendly local café which makes some of the best coffee in the South Island! If you’re spending more time in Greymouth, consider renting a bike and spending some more time exploring the surrounding forests.
