Holidays to Kaikoura, New Zealand

For wildlife experiences, Kaikoura is totally unique. Perching on the edge of a fault line, the coast of Kaikoura plunges directly into a two kilometre deep canyon, making it prime hunting ground for Giant Sperm Whales who frequent the waters next to the town. Kaikoura is famous for its whale watching and there are daily trips venturing out to see these magnificent creatures – you may also see Southern Right Whales, Humpback, Fin, Pilot, and even Blue Whales. Dusky, Common, Hector’s and Risso’s Dolphins, Fur Seals, and albatrosses are all commonly sighted, and we highly recommend making this part of any trip to the South Island.

If boating isn’t your thing, you can board a plane or helicopter for a thrilling aerial tour of the coast. Not only will you see the whales but you’ll also get a fabulous view of the Kaikoura Peninsula and the township. For a more active whale watching experience, take a guided kayaking tour or hire a paddleboard – nothing beats getting this close to the water!

Stretch your legs and explore the Peninsula Walkway. There are amazing viewpoints and the highlight of this walk is the Fur Seal colony, and a colony of Hutton’s Shearwater, which can only be found along this stretch of the coast.

Kaikoura boasts rich Maori culture and you can learn about the legend of Paikea, the Whale Rider, by going in search of the carvings depicting the legend on the coastal tracks around the town.

Let's talk
After a flying visit out to see friends many years ago, New Zealand has well and truly captured my heart and will forever be my spiritual home. I have since spent over a year living and working in various locations across the country, including the incredible and remote Stewart Island. The adventurous and charming locals, unbelievable vistas, world class wine and unique and fascinating wildlife keep me making the journey back out year after year. You really do have to see it for yourself!
