Milford Sound with Mitre Peak, Fiordland, New Zealand
Holidays to Milford Sound, New Zealand
Milford Sound, nestled deep in New Zealand’s Fiordland, is one of its can’t-miss destinations. It’s a region of resplendent beauty – looming mountains, inky waters and enchanting waterfalls. Although it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, its serenity is striking. Be prepared to experience Milford Sound in all weathers. Rainfall comes and goes quickly, but only adds to the area’s mystique, with rain creating impromptu waterfalls and glittery rainbows.
At the centre is the majestic Mitre Peak. If we’re being pedantic, it’s actually five separate peaks that cluster around a single summit. A few tackle the climb, but the majority will spend a while trying to take the best possible photo. Frustratingly, even the most accomplished shutterbugs fail to capture the true essence of this extraordinary place – it must be seen to be believed.
A cruise is considered one of the best ways to discover the sights of Milford Sound, although sailing is a good option too. More adventurous types might choose to head out on a sea kayak, go diving in the crystalline waters or try flightseeing to appreciate the scenery from above. It’s not uncommon to see pods of bottlenose dolphins riding the bow wave of cruise ships or visiting groups of kayakers. On the shore, see if you can spot little blue penguins, or their rarer cousin, the Fiordland crested penguin with its vivid orange beak and blonde streaks.
Trekking along the well-marked trails is popular, experiencing the wilderness of the landscape beneath your feet while your eyes adjust to the sweeping vistas. The most famous is the Milford Track that meanders through the alpine scenery for over 50 kilometres across suspension bridges, boardwalks and a mountain pass. The Milford Track guides its followers to pristine lakes, enormous valley views and Sutherland Falls, the tallest waterfall in New Zealand.
The magic of Milford Sound isn’t just above water. The Milford Sound Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory is a large underwater viewing room, ten metres below the surface. There’s black coral and colourful marine life to admire in this reverse-aquarium.
