Holidays to Wanaka, New Zealand

Wanaka town is good fun. It’s right next to the still waters of Lake Wanaka, and in the summer the waterfront comes alive. Stop by the Lake Bar for a sunset pint, and take some time to consider how you will spend your time here! The town has a reputation for good food, and you can explore several award winning restaurants including Kika and Bistro Gentil. In the town itself, we recommend a visit to Puzzling World, where you can get lost in the maze or marvel at the illusion rooms. This is a great way to spend a couple of hours, especially if you are travelling with kids. Wanaka is also home to the National Transport and Toy Museum where you can see one of the largest private collections of vehicles, aircraft and toys in the world!

We definitely recommend getting out into the backcountry, and you can do so on foot, mountain bike, horseback or even four-wheel drive. Mount Aspiring National Park is accessed by driving over the Haast Pass – one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand. Make sure you stop off to see the blue pools, an unbelievably turquoise network of rivulets, waterfalls and pools which will make any photographer’s day. Our favourite walk in Mount Aspiring is the Rob Roy Glacier Track. It takes around half a day, and will lead you through gorges and streams, alpine vegetation and up to a panoramic view of the Rob Roy Glacier itself.

Finally, take a boat cruise on Lake Wanaka to Mou Waho Island. The island is completely free of predators, allowing the rare, flightless Buff Weka bird to flourish. These inquisitive and cute birds are definitely worth the trip, and make sure you take hiking boots to see the island’s secret – a lake on top of the island, in the lake!

Let's talk
After a flying visit out to see friends many years ago, New Zealand has well and truly captured my heart and will forever be my spiritual home. I have since spent over a year living and working in various locations across the country, including the incredible and remote Stewart Island. The adventurous and charming locals, unbelievable vistas, world class wine and unique and fascinating wildlife keep me making the journey back out year after year. You really do have to see it for yourself!
