Holidays to Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage is a large port city in the beautiful southcentral region of Alaska. It combines a thriving city life with the rugged wilderness that Alaska is known for.

There are excellent restaurants in Anchorage, serving up the local fare of king crab, halibut and salmon. Anchorage’s foodie scene is complemented by museums, galleries and theatres. There are parks to wander through and there’s plenty for children to enjoy, with its zoo and top-notch Imaginarium Discovery Centre inside the Anchorage Museum. If you’re here on an adults-only break, delving into the historical exhibits of the Anchorage Museum and Alaska Native Heritage Centre to learn about Alaska’s fascinating stories isn’t time wasted.

The city’s shoreline is best explored on two-wheels and following the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail around some of Anchorage’s scenic highlights. For more adventure, you don’t have to travel far out of the city centre to happen upon Alaska’s natural majesty. Take a day cruise from nearby Seward or Whittier to visit the glaciers, go whale watching, or head to the Chugach Mountains for a hike.

After days of adventure, one of the best ways to spend an evening around Anchorage is by going to one of the nearby viewing spots of Eklutna Tailrace or Girdwood to see the ethereal Northern Lights dancing in the night sky between September and April.

Let's talk
I have been lucky enough to travel the rugged state of Alaska fairly extensively and it really is like nowhere else on earth. The memories of the vast, sparsely populated open spaces, larger than life mountain ranges and incredible, and prominent, wildlife will keep me in awe for a long time to come.
