Holidays to Victoria, British Columbia

On the southern point of Vancouver Island sits Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia – an enchanting place home to spectacular coastline, irresistible gardens, a kooky castle and an abundance of wildlife.

The Inner Harbour neighbourhood is peppered with boutique shops and street vendors alike. Vibrant and full of character, this popular tourist destination is a lovely area to take a leisurely stroll or bike ride. It’s also home to the Parliament Buildings and the Royal British Columbia Museum, which are some of Victoria’s most popular tourist attractions. Whether you choose to watch the seaplanes coming in to land and taking off from the harbour or tuck into some deliciously fresh seafood, this buzzing neighbourhood is bound to whet your appetite for the city.
Just north-west of Inner Harbour is Goldstream Provincial Park. With its lush flora and the Goldstream river, this is an area of indisputable natural beauty. The park is beautiful all year round, but it is particularly popular from autumn to early winter. This is because of the annual salmon migration, and countless tourists flock to watch the fish leap through the air and weave their way upstream.

Another essential visit for nature enthusiasts is Butchart Gardens, a world famous horticultural landmark. Built on what once was a limestone quarry, this stunningly curated garden has been on display to the public for over 100 years and is home to flowers and plants from across the world. Victoria is the best place on earth to view orca (killer whales) in the wild. The Juan de Fuca and Haro Straits are home to three resident pods, referred to as J, K and L. Nearly 85 whales belong to these three families, allowing you ample opportunity to have your own close encounter of the deep.

From fine dining to street food, Victoria has a huge selection of eateries that will treat your taste buds. As expected, the sea plays a big part in Victoria’s cuisine, with fresh seafood available on most menus. Take a walk down Fisgard Street and pop in to one of the many boutique restaurants or mosey along Humbolt Street for some high quality cheap eats. With the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada, there’s something to suit every taste.

Let's talk
Born in Toronto, I spent two years living in British Columbia after university, where I was completely taken by the incredible wilderness and adventure opportunities. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to travel extensively in the vast country of my birth, as well as in Alaska. Highlights have included observing the polar bears of Hudson Bay, viewing coastal Alaskan brown bears in Katmai National Park and spending time in the beautiful walled city of Quebec.
